Ruby Gist Cooke, 83, of 294 Westover Drive Spartanburg, SC passed away on Saturday,
October 29, 2022 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
She is an original Native of Union, SC residing in Brooklyn New York for over 40 years before
returning to South Carolina in 1998. She was the widow of Elbert Nathaniel Cooke, and the
daughter of the late Lily Mae Sims Gist and Simon “Bo” Gist.
She accepted Christ at an early age joining Redhill Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev.
Moorman, and later joined Mt. Rowell Baptist Church.
She spent her leisure time with her family, having a special love for her nieces and nephews, and
completing crossword puzzle books. Her infectious laugh and personality that was larger than
life will be missed by those she encountered in her life journey.
She attended Adamsburg School and was employed in the domestic and homemaker field for
over thirty years.
In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by one son Stanley Earl Gist, two
brothers James David “J.D.” Gist, and Willie James Gist; one sister-in-law Maggie Gist, one
niece Beverly Ann Gist, two nephews Michael Gist and Willie James Gist Jr., two special friends
Betty Stewart and Leroy Wilkes.
Left to cherish her memory is one daughter Melissa Harris of Spartanburg, SC, five
grandchildren, Shanea Bishop of Union, SC, Latresha Hughes and Tiffany Gist of Boiling
Springs, SC; David Davis of Spartanburg, SC, Kassetta (Emmanuel Sr.) Dalton of Atlanta, GA;
eleven great-grandchildren, Zariah Worthy, Raheim Jeter, Eddie Stewart Jr., Carlson Byrd,
Kimshay Dalton, Emmanuel Dalton Jr., Gabrielle Dalton, Jahaim Harris, David Davis Jr., Taylor
Davis, and Zyion Browning; three great-great grandchildren, Harlem Worthy-Smith, Zaniah
Browning, and Chase Browning; one sister, Shirley (James) Gory of Union, SC, one Sister-in-
law Christine “Peggy” Gist of Spartanburg, SC, special cousin and lifelong friend Hazel Rodgers
and a host of other family members and friends who were dear to her.
