The angel of mercy descended and brought eternal peace to James Arthur Gilliam on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. He was born January 16, 1930 in Carlisle, SC, the son of the late Fred Allen and Marie Gilliam. He attended Union County Schools and was a retired pulp wood worker and member of Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church. “Champ,” as he was affectionately known, loved planting, and working in his garden. He also liked hunting, fishing, attending church, and helping other people. James was preceded in death by his sister, Lillie Mae Curenton (and husband, Albert Curenton, Sr.) and nephew, Albert Curenton Jr. of Aliquippa, a brother, Earl William Gilliam, Sr. (and wife, Nina F. Gilliam) of Buffalo, SC. Surviving are: one sister, Freddie Mae Allen of Asheville, NC, and a host of nieces and nephews, Kathy S. Johnson of Jonesville, SC, Caroline Thompson of Buffalo, SC, Sharon Gilliam of Buffalo, SC, Earl (Natasha) Gilliam Jr., of Greenville, SC, Gerald (Jenelle) Gilliam of Union, SC, James (Avis) Curenton of Beaver Falls, and Mamie Curenton, Eugene Curenton, Annette Curenton, Timothy Curenton, Charles Curenton, Vincent (Irene) Curenton, and Desi Curenton all of Aliquippa. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11-6 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2020 at Jeter's Chapel A.M.E. Church in Carlisle, SC.
