Brigadier General (Retired) Hinton Arnold Price, Jr., 76, of 841 Hawkins Road, Union, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024 at his home after years of declining health due to cancer. BG (Ret) Price was born in Duluth, Georgia on December 16, 1947, a son of the late Hinton Arnold Price, Sr. and Mary Ellen Pittard Price. He was a graduate of Greenville High School and Clemson University, where he participated in Army ROTC. After graduating from Clemson University in 1969, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army. From his first duty assignment in Alaska, he was ordered to report to the Republic of Vietnam where he was assigned to the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV). He served in this command until his honorable discharge from the United States Army in 1972. Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, he launched his military career with the South Carolina Army National Guard (SCARNG). His first SCARNG duty assignment was Commander of Detachment 1 Combat Support Company, 4 th Battalion, 118 th Infantry (Mechanized), stationed in Gaffney, SC. In 1972, he concurrently served in the civilian position of Cherokee County Recreation Director. Throughout his distinguished career, he also served in the following positions of leadership: Commander of Combat Support Company, headquartered in Woodruff, SC; Administrative Officer (full time support supervisor) of the 4 th Battalion, 118 th Infantry (Mech), headquartered in Union, SC; Administrative Officer of the 218t MEB, headquartered in Newberry, SC; and many additional duty positions including Detachment Commander, Company Commander, Executive Officer, and S1 Personnel Officer. BG (Ret) Price’s illustrious military career culminated with his appointment as Chief of Staff of the South Carolina Army National Guard, headquartered in Columbia, SC, during which time he was responsible for over 1200 soldiers and a budget exceeding 175 million dollars. In 1998, BG (Ret) Price retired from the SCARNG with over 29 years of honorable and faithful service. After his retirement, he continued to serve the SCARNG by performing duties as the statewide Campaign Director for MG Stan Spears, SCARNG Family Programs Coordinator, and Coordinator for the 4th Battalion, 118th Infantry Retiree Club (OWONCOE). A genuine patriot, he devoted his life to serve and protect the country he loved and the freedoms we hold dear. BG (Ret) Price is survived by two sons, Stephen and Brian Price, both of Clemson, SC, one brother, Mark Price and wife Donna Vickery of Greenville, SC, a sister, Nancy O’Connell of Cumming, GA, two beloved grandchildren, John and William Price, and numerous cherished friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Sandra Buchanan. A memorial service with military honors will be held January 26, 2024, 2:30 PM at Fairforest Presbyterian Cemetery, Cedar Grove Road, Jonesville, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Care, 1530 Drayton Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29303. Lewis Funeral Home and Crematory has charge of the arrangements.
