David Gist, Jr. of 1159 Berry Farm Road of Union, SC entered the arms of Jesus on Friday, August 27, 2021. David was born October 29, 1964 and was the son of the late David “Dude” Gist and Elizabeth “Lib “Gist.
David attended the public schools in Union County and is a 1982 graduate of Union High School where he was a class clown and Homecoming King. David also attended York Technical College.
“Big Dave”, as he was affectionately known by most was loved by all and never met a stranger and was a man of many talents. David had an infectious laugh and a personality that was bigger than life. “Big Dave” was an avid sports fan. He loved his Dallas Cowboys, Clemson Tigers, and his Union High School Yellow Jackets. David was a member of Jeter Chapel AME church and served on the Steward Board and Pulpit Aide. David loved to sing and was a faithful choir member and secretary to his beloved Duncanleers.
David had a love for people, which led him to an over thirty-year career in mortuary services where he served and comforted many people in surrounding communities. The funeral home was his passion. He worked at Whitney Funeral Home, McCutchen Funeral Home in Winnsboro, Gordon Mortuary in Gaffney, Kings Funeral Home in Chester, Collins Funeral Home in Spartanburg and currently at Lewis Funeral Home in Union. David had an eye for beautiful flowers and spent countless days and hours assisting at Gwinn’s Florist.
Left to cherish his memory is a loving brother, Donald Keith (Monica) Gist, one niece Latavia Cherelle Gist, one nephew Donald Keith “DK” Jr., one great niece Kaitlynn “Smooches” Gist and one great nephew Kamren Gist. Two God sons, Tony C. McNeal Jr. and Jarvis K. Broadus. David also leaves 4 uncles, Berlie Dawkins of Whitmire, MacArthur Gist, James William (Carolyn) and Berry Lee Gist all of Santuc. One great uncle, Bobbie Dawkins Sr., of Whitmire SC. Three aunts, Johnsie Harris of Youngstown, Ohio, Fannie D. Shelton(Boisy Lee) of Whitmire, SC and Ruth D. Lyles of Blair, SC. Annie Ruth Thomas of Santuc and Dorthy G. Gray of Union. Two great aunts Ann Dell Dawkins of Whitmire, SC and Berniece Gist of Santuc, SC. God parents, Fox and Elizabeth “Lib” Mitchell of Santuc. David also leaves a host of first cousins, whom he loved so dearly. He spread his love all the way down to
second, third, fourth and fifth cousins and so many friends. David was one of a kind and our family will miss his big heart and sense of humor. David, we will leave the light on for you.
